Walt Disney once started planning a Disney Park right here in Marceline!
After returning to his boyhood hometown of Marceline in 1956, Walt began buying the Disney family farmland and surrounding acres through his private company, Retlaw Enterprises. His idea became known as “The Marceline Project”. It was to be a living history park to teach people about farm life, and how small towns helped build America. The idea was driven by his memories and early experiences that helped shape his imagination, which people can see in his movies and Parks around the world.
Walt’s connection to Marceline was lifelong. Main Street, U.S.A. at Disney parks was inspired by Marceline’s main street, and Walt often credited his childhood here as a major influence on his work. People have reported that Walt kept a copy of “The Marceline Project” plan on the desk in his Walt Disney Studios office.
Sadly, Walt passed away on December 15, 1966, before The Marceline Project could move forward. After his death, the land was sold back to locals.
Today, visitors can still experience the hometown that inspired Walt. From Marceline’s own Main Street USA, to the Walt Disney Hometown Museum, the Disney family farm area, and the friendly townspeople who love to share the history and stories that continue to connect our small Missouri town to one of the world’s most famous dreamers.
Come visit Marceline – where Walt’s story began.
